Data Conversion

*  How information systems are helping the company?

Wal-Mart is a United States based company which heavily relies on Information Systems for its management based
progress. It has invested around $600 million to promote and develop its Information Systems framework across a span of five years with persistent progress and continual growth trying to cover one of the most competitive markets in the world

*  How is data being converted to?  ◦ Information ◦ knowledge

It has achieved such progression by first introduction a type of information system known as POS, which was implemented in the eighties itself. This POS system helps convert the technical statistical data which when analyzed can be converted into useful knowledge which can be implemented to benefit the overall management system to extract higher gains and profits. A POS system is a computer based system which helps to extract information such as item identification, price determination, sales, receipts and sales data maintenance. Such software’s helps in business management for recording and reporting business information across the managers and system reviewers giving them enough knowledge to implement a better strategically beneficial approach to the current market.

• How are the information systems reducing time/cost/errors?

As the information system helps get beneficial information when reviewed and with automated technology in place, it helps prevent overstocking of products with better inventory management system. It helps to forecast better hence reduces the time, cost and errors. With demographical surveys it helps to reduce the cost and errors. As in terms of Wal-Mart with its “on-time delivery” information system in place it helps to restock in a better fashion helping to reduce the time and cost factor by reducing overstocking of products and transportation drivers and petrol costs. A transportation management (TMS) in place helps reduce the cost by efficient delivery of products to different stores across various countries where every driver is allotted a cost saving route where they deliver the products with are based on the automated information systems decisions.
